I Feel the Earth Move Under my Feet
I heard the screen door slam first and thought someone had entered the room. Then there was a lot of movement, and still half asleep I wondered why someone was pulling the house with a truck. I looked up and saw the windows shaking, like they do in the movies when the aliens come to town in their big ships. Yeah, so I thought aliens before my brain made it to earthquake. I hopped out of bed and saw Eric coming towards me through the carport/breezeway that connects his mom's house and the room we were staying in. It had occurred to me that this could be an earthquake, but not really. It was more like I was dreaming about an earthquake. I was more amused than frightened, which probably doesn't bode well for my survival instinct, except that my legs did take me to safer ground even if my brain was still set at "What the..." mode. There are all sorts of cows and pigs and goats kept by the neighbors here. They sure were quiet. I thought they were supposed to moo and make a ruckus to warn us of these things. What up Hawaiian cows? So all is well, everyone here is fine, and except for a few broken glasses and some overturned coffee mugs, there was hardly any damage to the house here. We have water and power and food. The stores in Hilo are open. All pretty lucky for my first earthquake.
