Fa la la la la
I have almost all of my Christmas shopping done this year, early for the first year ever. Sure, there are still a few items to gather, but it's nice to have it almost all wrapped up, although not technically yet wrapped.

We're trying to get rid of a large portion of things in order to make way for baby, and maybe my feelings are a side product of that, but I find that I actually want for little this year. I'm not going to turn away any presents, but I'm honestly not feeling the strong desire to covet this year. Or I'm just feeling extremely practical. I received a gift card from my aunt and uncle as an early Christmas present, and I'll probably use it to buy a warm winter maternity coat instead of 3 fun sweaters and a bag and maybe a...and so on.

As we clean our closets we're donating our coats that we no longer use to New York Cares.

If you're in the New York area you can donate gently used coats:
Weekdays 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
Grand Central Terminal (Graybar Passage)
NY Penn Station (LIRR and NJ Transit/Amtrak concourses)
NY Port Authority Bus Terminal (Main concourse, 42nd Street entrance)

Anytime
New York City Police Precincts
Janovic Plaza stores (Business Hours)
W Hotel - Union Square

When I still lived in Houston I worked with NAM, Northwest Assistance Ministries. At Christmas you could adopt a family to buy Christmas presents for, and they'd always ask for things like socks that remind you how lucky you are to have plenty of socks and how grateful you should really be. Of course we never just gave them socks, and maybe they knew we wouldn't, but it was still one of the best experiences I've ever had as a volunteer. Since then I've been seriously lacking in the volunteerism and social justice realm, but I wonder if there's a program like that in New York. I've participated in food drives, clothing drives, and even toy drives, but it's been years since I've given directly to a family.

At any rate, giving rules, and can actually be better than receiving, just like everyone always said.
