I can't help but respond to the Virginia Tech shooting as a mother now (which feels strange to write, I think that's the first time I've ever typed the phrase, "as a mother"). Already I feel so protective of Sophie, I can't imagine what it must be like to lose a child at any age, or specifically at the time when you've raised them and protected them for years and have just tentatively released them into the world as new adults. I'm floored by the heroism of people like Liviu Librescu. I wonder how someone raises a person of such quality and sacrifice. At the same time for selfish reasons I hope Sophie would be the kind of girl who would exit out the window rather than throw herself in harm's way to protect another. I guess every mother feels the same.
